Sukhothai is an independent Thai restaurant group founded in 2002 by Executive Chef and Owner Ban Kaewkraikhot, who brought her passion for authentic Thai cooking to Chapel Allerton in Leeds, Yorkshire. What began as a single neighbourhood restaurant has grown into a trusted local brand with four core locations across Yorkshire — Chapel Allerton (the original), Headingley, Leeds City Centre (opened August 2012), and Harrogate. Ban's vision has always been to combine imaginative yet authentic Thai cuisine with warm, attentive service, using the finest and freshest Thai ingredients paired with local Yorkshire produce.
The restaurant has earned significant recognition over its 20+ year history, including six appearances in The Good Food Guide, inclusion in The Sunday Times Top Food List, and the honour of cooking for BBC MasterChef's Gregg Wallace. Sukhothai has been described as "the home of authentic Thai cuisine in Yorkshire." The core Yorkshire locations maintain consistently high food hygiene standards, with all holding 5-out-of-5 ratings from the Food Standards Agency as of their most recent inspections (2023–2026). The Harrogate location notably improved from a 2-out-of-5 rating in December 2024 to a 5-out-of-5 rating in January 2026. Additional independently operated restaurants using the Sukhothai name can be found in Great Missenden (Buckinghamshire), Hornchurch (Essex), Gravesend (Kent), and Wirral (Merseyside).
