Chaophraya is the flagship brand of Thai Leisure Group, the UK's largest Thai restaurant group. Founded in 2004 in Leeds by partners Kim Kwaikraihott and Martin Stead, the chain takes its name from the Chao Phraya River that flows through Bangkok. Kim, the culinary heart of the brand, grew up in rural Sukhothai province and moved to Bangkok at 15, where she built a successful street-food business running multiple Pad Thai stalls and winning an award for her recipe — the very same recipe still served across Chaophraya restaurants today. This authentic backstory underpins the brand's positioning as a premium Thai dining destination that blends traditional flavours with contemporary presentation.
The chain currently operates six UK locations: Aberdeen, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds and Newcastle. At its peak the group had additional sites in Manchester and Liverpool, but both closed in 2020 amid restructuring. Chaophraya positions itself as an "aspirational dining experience" with glamorous, Thailand-inspired interiors — several locations feature rooftop terraces with striking city views, such as Edinburgh's rooftop overlooking Edinburgh Castle. The menu spans classic Thai staples (Pad Thai, Tom Yum, green curry) alongside signature dishes like Royal Lamb Massaman and Sous Vide Beef Panang, with set menus priced from £32 to £58 per person and à la carte mains typically £12–£17. The restaurants also offer private dining, Thai cooking schools, and gift experiences.
In 2022, parent company Thai Leisure Group announced a £1 million investment to refurbish all six Chaophraya sites over three years, with plans to open further locations over the following five years. The group — which also operates the Thaikhun street-food brand — was founded in 2005 and reported a turnover exceeding £36 million at its peak. Chaophraya has generally maintained strong food hygiene standards, with its Leeds location holding a 5/5 rating (inspected March 2025) and Scottish locations achieving "Pass" ratings. Some English locations show ratings in the "Good" to "Very Good" range, though the Liverpool site did receive a zero rating in 2016 following a mouse infestation before closing permanently in 2020.
